London Zoo shares massive operation behind Silverback Gorilla's health check

Thankfully, 21-year-old Kiburi was given a clean bill of health after his recent CT scan.

London Zoo has shared some behind-the-scenes details about a gorilla’s recent health check.

As you can imagine, it was quite the operation to get Silverback gorilla Kiburi ready for his CT scan.

London Zoo said the 177kg primate had been under observation after battling recurrent gastrointestinal issues, prompting expert vets to take a closer look.

The 21-year-old Silverback was admitted for a CT scan yesterday (24th September), where both veterinary and human health specialists observed him.

Before his full health check could take place, Kiburi had to be anaesthetised, which was done with an injection in his upper arm.

This seemingly simple procedure took months of planning to achieve, with Kiburi participating in frequent training sessions with zookeepers and vet nurses, so that he would offer his arm for the anaesthetic to be administered.

The Zoo continued: “Once anaesthetised, Kiburi was first given a full cardiology examination before being taken to receive his CT scan.

“The scan, which was focused on Kiburi’s abdomen, revealed no obvious cause for concern, a diagnosis supported by doctors from the NHS who specialise in gastrointestinal health and imaging, and provided unique assistance for Kiburi’s procedure.

“Through providing specialist care for our gorillas at the Zoo, we're able to advance understanding of gorilla health globally.”

Fans of London Zoo were quick to send well wishes to Kiburi via the Zoo’s Facebook page.

Dave Porritt wrote: “Having eye-to-eye contact with him was a really special experience. I hope his gastric problems are of a minor irritant.”

Loraine Woodhouse said, “Kiburi is one of the most beautiful animals I’ve ever seen. I often go to watch him at the zoo. So glad he’s come through his scan with a clean bill of health.”

The Vet with Pets commented: “Amazing job - well done to the team involved for both training and treatment.”
