London weather: Snow and ice warning in place across the capital today

It’s going to be very cold in London this week, with temperatures dropping to -3 °C some nights.

Forget a White Christmas, London is currently experiencing a frosty start to 2026, with the Met Office issuing a weather warning for snow and ice.

The warning will remain in place until around midday, and covers the whole of Greater London.

The weather forecaster has warned there could be some disruption to travel as a result of the ice, including delays to train and bus services.

According to the hourly forecast, temperatures could drop to -2 °C tonight (2nd January) in London. Temperatures will remain just above freezing throughout the day.

The warning says: “An area of sleet and snow is expected to move south-eastwards across parts of England and Wales, lasting approximately 2 or 3 hours in any one place.

“Where snow falls, 1 or 2 cm is likely for some, and perhaps as much as 5cm snow is possible in a few spots, especially higher ground of north Wales, northwest England and perhaps the northwest Midlands.

“Some ice may form as a result of precipitation falling onto frozen surfaces, and icy patches will also develop quickly as sleet and snow clears.”

Elsewhere in the country, Amber weather warnings have been issued for snow and ice as Arctic air brings a prolonged spell of freezing weather for the start of the New Year.

Though the more severe warnings are in place in Scotland.
