It’s only a few short weeks away until Christmas arrives for the 2022 holiday season in London, but with the events on offer throughout the festive period it’s hard not to realise how close it actually is. So close in fact that the Met Office has released its long-range forecast including what the weather may look like on Christmas Day.

Rather than ask the bookie’s question of “will it snow on Christmas Day”, the Met Office has  instead given an overview of what could happen between the end of the week (December 2) all the way through to Boxing Day.

Before then, the weather in London for this week looks to be ideal for getting out and about; no torrential downpours have been forecast so far for the capital, despite conditions midweek changing from cloudy to overcast. Drivers may also wish to be aware that overnight frost, fog and mist will be present as they pose a “higher chance”

The Met Office is also reporting some early morning mist or fog from this Friday, with light showers a possibility throughout the weekend. Londoners should however be prepared for some sunny spells and a breeze rather than heavy gales that affected the UK in October, leading to weather and flood warnings for the capital.

The unsettled weather looks set to continue throughout next week but the South_West_England">southwest of England will be more at risk to persistent rain which may become wintry in higher ground. Compared to other December months in previous years, temperatures look to be “a little below average” to start the month off with, but easterly winds may make the south feel cooler.

Christmas long range weather forecast

As for the week leading into Christmas and Boxing Day, the Met Office has forecasted that the weather will continue to be settled with “wintry showers mainly confined” to higher ground areas of the United Kingdom. However, the temperatures are set to be “a little below average” compared to other festive seasons.

A frontal system (caused when air transitions from cold to warm or vice versa) looks to be moving in from the west, causing colder conditions at times and increasing the likelihood of overnight frost and fog being “higher than normal.” The Met Office has also yet to indicate if it will be a White Christmas in the capital in 2022 due to only being able to forecast such an event five days ahead of time.
