London Weather: Flood warnings for the capital as rain pummels the UK again this week

Four flood warnings and 16 flood alerts are currently in effect in London as rain continues to hammer the United Kingdom

Rain has once again pummelled London over the last week and as the wild weather conditions continue, the UK Government have issued four separate Flood Warnings for the capital. This comes alongside news that 16 separate areas of the capital  are also under the lesser Flood Alert notification.

The UK Government website dedicate to flood warnings and alerts has confirmed

flooding is expected to occur in the following areas:

  • Burstow Stream at East and North Horley
  • River Medway between Forest Row and Penshurst
  • River Mole at Charlwood and Hookwood
  • Rivers Eden and Eden Brook from Crowhurst and Blindley Heath to Penshurst

Those areas currently under a Flood Warning should look to act by turning off gas, water and electricity, moving things upstairs or to safety and moving family, pets and cars to safety. If residents in these areas have property protection products such as flood barriers, or air brick covers, they are advised to use them now.

Those areas of London under the lesser, but still important, Flood Alert status are in effect in the following areas of the capital:

  • Chertsey Bourne
  • Cranleigh Waters
  • Lower River Medway
  • Middle River Medway
  • Ravensbourne area in the London Boroughs of Lewisham, Bromley, Greenwich and Croydon
  • River Blackwater and The Cove Brook
  • River Bourne from Hadlow to East Peckham
  • River Darent from Westerham to Dartford
  • River Mole and its tributaries from Kinnersley Manor to South Hersham
  • Rivers Eden and Eden Brook
  • River Teise and Lesser Teise area from Horsmonden to Yalding
  • Shuttle and Cray
  • Upper River Medway
  • Upper River Mole, Ifield Brook, Gatwick Stream and Burstow Stream
  • Upper River Stour
  • Upper River Wey

Residents in these areas are advised to be prepared in the event the flood alert is raised by having a bag ready with vital items like insurance documents and medications in case you need to leave your home, check you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies and plan how you’ll move family and pets to safety.
