More than 45,000 people joined Sir Mo Farah in putting on their running shoes for a 26.2-mile challenge on Sunday.
On a grey, drizzly morning in a very crowded city, spirits were up among runners and supporters at the London Marathon.
For Sir Mo it was an emotional final London Marathon and he came in at a very respectable ninth.
Elsewhere, celebrities such as television presenter Kirsty Gallagher joined fundraisers.
The marathon coincided with Extinction Rebellion’s The Big One protest. Activists - who have gathered outside Parliament in Westminster to call for action on the climate crisis - waved flags and cheered.
Ethiopian-born Dutch runner Sifan Hassan won the women’s race, while Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum was victorious in the men’s.
Australia’s Madison de Rozario came first in the women’s wheelchair race. Switzerland’s Marcel Hug beat his own course record to win a fifth men’s wheelchair race.
This London Marathon returned to the spring slot after the coronavirus pandemic caused the event to be postponed over the past three years. In the last three years the event took place in the autumn. The 2023 edition marks the 43rd running of the famous marathon.
