In 2023, London saw a marked increase in car thefts and other related car crimes.

Last year, according to figures from the Home Office, the Met Police recorded 36,133 crimes of ‘theft of a motor vehicle’ from June 2022 to June 2023, up from 27,771 in the same period in the year before.

Of the 36,133 crimes recorded, 86% were unsolved by Scotland Yard with just 1.34% of cases leading to a charge.

At the time the figures were released Richmond Park MP Sarah Olney said: “There is a car theft epidemic across London. Criminal gangs are being allowed to act with impunity while victims are denied justice.

"The government is effectively decriminalising car theft by letting these gangs get away with it.”

Data released by security firm ADT has revealed the top 10 London boroughs with the highest levels of car thefts in the 2023/34 financial year.
