These closures come amid a flurry of other banks closing branches. HSBC recently announced that they would close 69 branches across the UK, adding to the 82 branches they closed in 2021, totally 151 HSBC branches to close in under two years.

Why are banks closing?

More branches are closing amid a surge in people choosing to do their banking online instead of doing it in person.

It is also believed that the coronavirus pandemic essentially forced people into banking online, and sped up the transition from face-to-face banking to online.

As of 2020, around 1.9 billion people are actively online banking, with that number expected to increase to 2.5 billion people by 2024.

Lloyd’s has reported a 27% increase in the use of its mobile banking app over the last two years, and a 12% rise in regular users of its online banking system.

Are any of the branches in London earmarked for closure?

Out of the 60 that are set to close, only three Lloyd’s Bank Group banks, of which they are all Halifax, have been earmarked for closure are in London.

The branches due to close are: Finchley Central, which is set to close its doors for good on July 12, Worcester Park, which will close on July 20 and Halifax Penge, which is earmarked for closure on August 10.

Has this affected the share price?

Despite the recent announcement that 60 branches would be closed by the Lloyd’s Banking Group, the share price of the banking giant is up by 0.14% as of Thursday, March 24, according to the London Stock Exchange.
