Moment fishy thief batters down door to steal from 'Jack The Chipper' takeaway

This is the moment a thief batters down the door to a fish and chip shop named Jack The Chipper to steal 10p coins.

Footage from Jack the Chipper in Greenwich, southeast London, on Saturday (January 3) shows a figure in a beanie hopping off a bike before kicking in the glass door.

The bandit then heads straight for the till where he can be seen loading his pockets with cash, which the owner said mostly consisted of small coins such as 10p’s.

Owner Mehmet Cafer, 44, says that the stolen money was only worth under £150, but that it will cost around £2,000 to fix the damage to the front door.

‘Iconic’ chippy targeted by crook

His iconic chippie has come under scrutiny in the past, with locals complaining that the punny name was “glorifying a serial killer”– but they stand by their choice and do not plan to change.

The break-in was spotted when the fresh fish delivery arrived at 6am, and Mehmet was called right away, jumping out of bed to come see the damage for himself.

He said: “When I got the call I jumped out of bed. My missus couldn’t even believe it. I am such a nice guy. I am doing lots of good things and all the time bad things keep happening to me.

£2,000 damage to door

“He was a professional. He had gloves on and everything. He went straight for the till. He took all the cash including the coins, even the 10p’s. It is disgusting. He broke our door for £120.

“It is going to cost me thousands of pounds to fix the damage to the door. It cost me £300 just to fix the lock.”

The owner claims that the break-in happened around 3am, and that it is not the first time they have been hit.

He also says that several other businesses in the area have been targeted.

Mehmet says that Greenwich is declining as an area, and they have seen lots of graffiti outside the front of the shop.

Police ‘not doing anything’ says chippy owner

He said: “It is happening loads in Greenwich. I am just getting very angry now because this is the third time this has happened to us.

“I spoke to the police and nothing is happening. They didn’t even come to get the CCTV. They must be too busy. They are not doing anything.

“Greenwich is supposed to be safe, but it is one of the worst now. We have got to do something. It is such a nice place, we don’t need these types of people here.”

Despite the setbacks the owner says he will never give up on the fish and chip shop as he has such a strong love for the trade.

He added: “Everything has gone wrong from January 1. Sales have gone down and with all the thefts on top as well things are hard.

“I just don’t understand what is happening. It is not about the money it is about the frustration. I am angry.

“I will never give up. Fish and chips is a passion for me, I love it.”

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the incident was reported to them, and enquiries are ongoing.
