Footage posted on Twitter by bodybuilder Abhinav Ganguly (@totobhuto) showed firefighters at work. Around 70 firefighters and 10 engines were deployed after London Fire Brigade was called at 9.11am.

The brigade said part of the ground floor and roof, as well as half of the first and second floors containing flats, were alight.

The fire was brought under control by 11.47am.

Road closures were in place and people were being asked to avoid the area where possible.

Fire engines, including a 32-metre turntable ladder, from Sutton, Wallington, Mitcham, Wimbledon, Croydon, Soho and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
