Walthamstow shooting: Man, 25, gunned to death - second fatal shooting in Walthamstow in weeks

This was the second fatal shooting in Walthamstow in less than a month.

A murder probe has been launched after a 25-year-old man was shot to death in Walthamstow, the second fatal shooting in the area in weeks.

Police were called to Forest Rise just before 9.30pm on Saturday after people reported they could hear gunshots.

Officers said the injured victim, who has not been named, was taken to hospital in a private vehicle.

Paramedics raced to save him but he died in hospital.

It is the second fatal shooting in weeks, after Sam Brown was shot to death in Cheney Row in late July.

This was also the third murder in Waltham Forest in that time period.

A cordon is in place at the scene while the shooting is investigated.

No arrests have yet been made but cops currently suspect it could have been a targeted attack.

Police say a party was happening at a nearby community centre and are urging anyone who went, as well as any other witnesses, to come forward.

Det Ch Insp Laurence Smith from the Met said: “This is a thoroughly senseless act that has led to the loss of a young man’s life.

“It is vital that we speak to anyone who witnessed what happened so we can give his family the answers they deserve.

“At this early stage in our investigation we believe this was a targeted attack, however we are keeping an open mind to all possibilities.

“We understand that there was a party going on at a nearby community centre at the time of the shooting.

“It is possible that attendees may have seen what happened.

“We need you to speak to us.

“Whether you do so anonymously via Crimestoppers or you come to us directly- we need to know what you saw.”

Ch Supt Simon Crick, who is in charge of policing in Waltham Forest and Newham said: “I am deeply saddened and appalled that another young man has lost his life on our streets.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ family at this time.

“I am acutely aware of how concerning this incident will be for our local community.

“Last week more of your officers were deployed into key locations in Waltham Forest to provide high visibility re-assurance. This will continue this week.

“We have also seen addition resources provided to us from our Violent Crime Task Force.

“Violence suppression continues daily in many ways across Waltham Forest. Your officers will be in the vicinity of this tragic incident today.

“I urge anyone who has any concerns or information to speak with them.”

Cllr Khevyn Limbajee, cabinet member for community safety in Waltham Forest, said: “This latest murder is the third in as many weeks in Waltham Forest.

“My heart goes out to those mourning, to lose someone so young is a tragedy no one should have to face. Three lives have been lost senselessly to violence that blights our community.

“I have called an urgent meeting with the Borough Commander to hear how the police are responding to the recent rise in this fatal violence.

“For those who know how this man was murdered and can help bring someone to justice, I urge you to contact the police immediately.

“Council officers will be assisting the police in any way we can to support the investigation and react to this unacceptable rise in violence.”

While MP Stella Creasy said: “Walthamstow I have a sad duty to report another fatal shooting in our community at Forest Rise.

“If you know anything about this incident please do come forward.”
