Exclusive: 14 outsourced Croydon University Hospital security staff arrested by police safeguarding officers

Officers at a Met Police safeguarding unit have arrested 14 outsourced members of the security staff at Croydon University Hospital.

Police swooped on the hospital’s A&E, in Mayday Road, Thornton Heath, Croydon, on May 12 and arrested all of the contractors at the same time.

The Met have said they are investigating the “improper use of CCTV” which shows force used during interactions between the security staff and members of the public on hospital grounds.

The officers launched the investigation after CCTV recordings were found on one of the security staff’s phone, when police were investigating a separate matter.

A source has told LondonWorld that it relates to videos and messages shared on a WhatsApp group between the contractors.

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust - which runs the hospital - said it is co-operating fully with the investigation.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said: “Officers from the South Area Safeguarding Unit are investigating the improper use of CCTV by contracted workers, who provide security services at Croydon University Hospital.

“The investigation was launched after CCTV recordings were found on an individual’s phone as officers were making enquiries about an unrelated matter.

“At this stage, 14 people have been arrested. They have all bailed until June.

“Investigation continues - the hospital is assisting officers with their enquiries.

“The footage shows interactions between security and members of the public on hospital grounds where force was used.”

While a trust spokesperson added: “On May 12, we were informed of an ongoing police investigation regarding a number of individuals employed by ICT Secure, who provide security services to the trust.

“We are co-operating fully with this investigation.

“An interim security team have been appointed, headed by our in-house security manager, to ensure we can continue to protect the safety of our patients and our staff.”
