Elizabeth line: Video shows man arrested getting off train after sexual assault on board

A man has been jailed for sexually assaulting a woman on an Elizabeth line train.

In March 2022, Edgar Junior boarded a train at Paddington and was arrested by British Transport Police as he disembarked at Reading after assaulting a fellow passenger.

Body-worn footage shows the moment BTP officers intercepted and arrested the 50-year-old, who has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for sexual assault.

Junior, of Barnsdale Road, Reading, pleaded guilty at Reading Crown Court on January 12, and on July 17 was jailed and handed a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) for 10 years, which states he cannot subject women or girls to unwanted attention or drink alcohol in a public place.

On March 28, 2022, Junior boarded an Elizabeth line train at Paddington and sat in the two seats opposite the victim. Police said he began pointing at the victim and making sexualised comments to her, causing another passenger to challenge him and tell him to leave her alone.

When the other passenger left the carriage, Junior sexually assaulted the victim before continuing to make further sexualised comments and gestures.

Another passenger saw what happened and attempted to speak to the victim, sitting with her for reassurance. Police said when the victim left the train, Junior was seen to continue approaching other women, making them uncomfortable.

It was reported to British Transport Police who intercepted the train at Reading, identified him and arrested him at the scene.

Detective Inspector Marvin Bruno said: “Junior is a disturbing individual who subjected a woman to a brazen and persistent sexual assault as she was travelling on a train alone, and the custodial sentence he’s been handed shows just how seriously these offences are taken.”

He said: “I am thankful to the bystanders who recognised his revolting behaviour and stepped in to help, before reporting it to police immediately which allowed our officers to then intercept the train and arrest him.
