Officers believe the couple passed through Liverpool, Harwich and Colchester, before they were captured on CCTV near East Ham station in Newham on the morning of Saturday, January 7.

The Met Police, which took over the operation, traced the couple to Whitechapel Road.

Investigators became concerned they were sleeping in a tent in cold temperatures.

They were later seen in Flower and Dean Walk, near Brick Lane.
