McDonald’s has been given the nod to open a new branch in an old Boots by Monument station. The American fast food chain is to take on the ground floor of 54 King William Street in the City of London.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said the new site will deliver ‘significant’ local investment and up to 120 jobs. The space, which occupies part of an eight-storey building, is understood to have been a McDonald’s before Boots moved in around 20 years ago, and to have been its seventh UK restaurant.

The approval by the City of London Corporation means there will be some work done to the building’s exterior, including reconfiguring the main entrance and replacing the existing windows. Signage will also be installed.

The interior will also be reworked to allow for interactive kiosks, food preparation and 20 covers at the restaurant. Now that approval has been granted, the new restaurant is expected to open later this year.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “We are excited about the opportunity to open a restaurant in Monument in late 2025. The restaurant will bring significant investment to the local area and deliver up to 120 full and part-time jobs.”

McDonald’s has more than 1,270 restaurants in the UK and employs more than 120,000 people. Its first UK branch was opened in Woolwich, South East London.
