With term starting, lots of young students will be exploring their new colleges.

London is home to more universities than the whole of Scotland, so if you are looking to study here, the options can be quite overwhelming.

Every university has its strengths and weaknesses so you should always check out factors such as the courses available and, in particular, where they are located.

Each year The Times publishes its Good University Guide, ranking universities across the country to help compare them. It uses factors including teaching quality, student experience, research quality and prospects for graduates.

The latest guide, published in September, had Oxford in the top spot, followed by St Andrews and Cambridge.

Here we look at how London’s universities ranked, from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), which had a total score of 954, down.

But remember, there is far more to a university than the headline number, so go take a look around, meet the faculty and explore the local cafes, pubs and restaurants before making any decision.

It’s a great city in which to be a student, although you should be prepared for the high cost of living compared to other parts of the country.

But if you do decide to study in London - welcome to our city!
