BBC Doctor Who: Photos as new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa illuminates the London Eye with assistant Millie Gibson

The new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, made his first public appearance to light up the London Eye, ahead of the Doctor Who special on Christmas Day.

Marking the Christmas institution of Doctor Who, the show's new stars lit up the London Eye on Monday (December 11).

Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Doctor for the Christmas Day special The Church of Ruby Road this month.

He and onscreen companion Millie Gibson were at the London Eye, sponsored by Lastminute.com, to switch on the Christmas lights on Monday. The display was designed to reflect the time vortex of the Tardis.

Joining them to help do the honours was presenter Yinka Bokinni, as well as guests including Doctor Who writer and producer Russell T Davies.

The Christmas Special is on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK from 5.55pm on December 25.

The final of the three 60th-anniversary specials was broadcast on Sunday, with David Tennant's time lord "bigenerating" into Gatwa's 15th Doctor. Gatwa, takes over the Tardis for a new adventure, joined by Ruby Sunday, played by Gibson.

Davina McCall will play herself in the Christmas special, as she joins the cast alongside Michelle Greenidge as Ruby’s mum Carla, Angela Wynter as Ruby’s grandmother Cherry and Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood.

The Church on Ruby Road sees the Doctor come face-to-face with mysterious goblins as his life collides with that of Ruby Sunday, who was abandoned on Christmas Eve as a baby. Now living with her mum and grandmother, her world is about to be turned upside in the tradition of many companions before her.
