The band enjoyed a slight rise to prominence on the popular internet destination MySpace, and after playing several local shows in the Los Angeles area in 2002, they signed with the record label Velvet Hammer.

Their first album was released on April 30, 2006, two months before it was scheduled to, with “Apologize” putting the band on the map.

Their first debut album was swiftly released in 2007, named Dreaming Out Loud. Apologize was the lead song from the album, and was picked up by the extremely popular band Timbaland, who remixed the song and got huge worldwide success.

The song reached number one in 16 countries, and was even nominated for a Grammy Award.

From then, the band enjoyed relative success and fame, but their next big single wouldn’t come until 2013 when their album, Native became the band’s first top ten album on the Billboard 200.

The lead single from the album, If I Lose Myself charting within the top ten in multiple countries.

But, it was the song ‘Counting Stars’ which catapulted the band to new heights, with it becoming their most successful song ever, even to this day. It went to the top five in countries such as New Zealand, the UK, the US, Austria, Canada, Germany, Ireland and more.

It peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, matching the highest peak Apologize reached six years prior.

To this day, it remains the band’s only song on Spotify with over one billion streams, sitting on 1.5 billion streams.
