But it’s not just handbag-pooches and lapdogs that Londoners are after, in fact, some new research has revealed city-dwellers are dreaming of big, bounding, loveable hounds (oh, and sausage dogs, but who can blame them?!)

Here’s the downlow on Londoners’ doggy dreams.

A new study from puppies.co.uk reveals the dog breeds Londoners fantasise about long before they bring a dog home. The results reveal London’s true canine wish list, from family-friendly favourites to compact companions.

Puppies.co.uk analysed thousands of aspirational Google searches, such as “what is the lifespan of a golden retriever”, “how much does a golden retriever cost”, “golden retriever temperament”, and “cute golden retriever names” rather than just traditional puppy listings, to uncover the true intent and desires of potential dog owners who are still in the dreaming phase before they make a purchase or decision to adopt.

With 6,030 searches, the Golden Retriever is clearly London’s favourite dream dog. Known for being gentle, loyal, and good with families, it’s a classic choice for first-time dog owners.

The Dachshund came second with 4,790 searches, showing Londoners also love small, quirky breeds. Close behind was the Rottweiler (4,750), while the Labrador Retriever (4,710) and Cavapoo (4,400) rounded out the top five.

Other popular choices include:

  • German Shepherd – 4,380 searches
  • Doberman – 3,920
  • Pomeranian – 3,600
  • French Bulldog – 3,360
  • Cane Corso – 3,080

In response to the findings, a spokesperson at puppies.co.uk said: "The research gives a glimpse into the heart of London. But these aren’t just impulsive searches – they’re signs of real intent and emotion. Londoners are researching things like temperament, health issues, lifespan, and costs to make sure the dog fits their lifestyle and gets the happy, healthy life it deserves.

“It’s a positive sign that more and more people are taking the time to understand what it means to care for a dog. After all, dogs are a lifetime commitment. When you’re thinking about getting a four-legged companion, you need to picture that dog as part of your family. You should never just choose a breed based on looks.”
