Its cute market, creative community and lovely shops are among the reasons why we love Herne Hill in London

Earlier this month Herne Hill (HH) was named the most desirable place to live in Britain - and to be fair, we can understand why.

The affluent area of South London has been overshadowed by its louder neighbour Brixton for a long time, but we think 2025 is HH’s time to shine.

The delightful suburb offers the best of both worlds, a friendly village atmosphere with a lively cultural scene.

Of course, a move to Herne Hill won’t come cheap, with the average asking price for a property in the area surpassing £1.66m.

Sadly renting isn’t much cheaper, the average rent in Herne Hill is between £546 and £1,015 per week.

It’s known for Brockwell Park, a vast green space perfect for picnics, jogging, and enjoying stunning views of London’s skyline.

The park is also home to the iconic Brockwell Lido, an Art Deco outdoor pool that’s popular for swimming and sunbathing.

The heart of Herne Hill is its bustling station area, featuring independent shops, cafes, and pubs.

Highlights include The Florence, a cosy gastropub, and the Herne Hill Market, held every Sunday, offering a mix of artisan goods, fresh produce, and street food.

Earlier this month, The Telegraph wrote: “The Sicilian Deli on Railton Road sells coffee and produce, while the Prince Regent pub is a firm favourite. A Gail’s bakery has opened, a sure sign that an area is among the “poshest”.

“It’s an area full of independent places too, such as Llewelyn’s restaurant which is next door to Lulu’s, a deli and wine bar. Blue Furniture is a second-hand store.”

The community vibe is strong, with a mix of families, young professionals, and long-term residents.

Its excellent transport links via Herne Hill station make it easy to access central London, while the neighbourhood retains a distinct sense of charm and calm away from the city’s hustle.
