LIMIN review London: I visited the UK's best Caribbean restaurant and got a taste for Island life

If you're craving Caribbean flavours and vibrant island vibes without the long-haul flight, LIMIN on London’s Southbank is a must-visit this summer.
Tucked away in Gabriel’s Wharf, just a short stroll from the National Theatre, this lively spot—run by Sham Mahabir and James Togut—was recently crowned the UK’s Best Caribbean Restaurant by the Caribbean Food Awards.

“Liming” in Trinidad means to “gather with good food, drink, and company,” and from Mahabir’s warm welcome, we were ready to embrace this island tradition the moment we arrived.
Rum punches were served on arrival, instantly easing us into the laid-back Caribbean vibe and setting the tone for a relaxed, flavour-packed evening.
To start our meal, we enjoyed a serving of “doubles,” which Mahabir describes as the unofficial national dish of Trinidad and Tobago.

The dish featured thin, crispy flatbreads topped with warmly spiced chickpeas, accompanied by a tangy tamarind sauce and a fiery lime pepper sauce.
Next came a platter of light bites, offering a tempting selection of menu highlights.
Among them was Trini Puri—crispy puri shells filled with seasoned mashed potatoes, paired with a sweet-and-sour tamarind sauce and a punchy scotch bonnet jam.

We also tucked into the restaurant’s signature chicken wings and freeta—a moreish blend of spinach and sweetcorn mixed with Indian spices and Caribbean herbs.

For the main course, we enjoyed a hearty serving of curried goat, paired with fluffy rice and Mahabir’s signature roti—rich, comforting, and full of flavour.

To round things off with a British-Caribbean twist, we tried the Island Catch—a tropical take on classic fish and chips.
The dish featured white fish in a crispy, spiced beer batter, served with curried peas and golden chips.

While it felt impossible to eat another bite, our gracious hosts Mahabir and Togut insisted we try the Trini rum cake ice cream—refreshing, sweet, and utterly delicious.
It’s no surprise LIMIN was named the UK’s Best Caribbean Restaurant—it offers not only fantastic food but a truly unique dining experience.

From the warmth of the hosts to the laid-back, beachy ambiance, LIMIN provides an island-style retreat right in the heart of the city.
I’ll definitely be returning this summer.
Dishes are reasonably priced, with starters ranging from £4 to £15 and main courses from £20 to £32.
