Greggs: Bakery chain to open new flagship store in Leicester Square this summer

The bakery chain Greggs has confirmed it will be opening a brand-new flagship shop at 1 Leicester Square.

Following months of speculation, the sausage roll specialists have confirmed that the store will open this summer.

A new display has appeared on the site of the store showing a sneak peek for fans.

The display shows a giant steak bake emerging from a Greggs bag on the site, where work is already underway.

Although the opening date is yet to be revealed by Greggs, passers-by have been taking to social media to share the excitement.

This new Greggs store will follow recent openings in the Strand, Canary Wharf, Paddington, St Pancras Station and King’s Cross.

The chain, which hails from Newcastle, is focusing on increasing its presence in the capital.

A spokesperson for Greggs said: “The opening of our new flagship shop in Leicester Square will be a huge moment as we continue to expand our presence across prime locations in central London.

“We’re excited to premiere our delicious food to new customers, including many tourists from outside of the UK who will get the opportunity to experience Greggs for the first time.”

Across the UK, Greggs will be opening around 150 new stores over the next year, taking the total to just under 2,500.

Rumours of the new store have been brewing for months after planning permission images were leaked in September of last year.

The images of the potential site sent Twitter into a meltdown as many speculated whether the rumours were actually true.

Passers-by have been sharing their excitement on Twitter, sharing images of the new store tease.

Jay Jaffa told followers:  “Errr so apparently @GreggsOfficial has inhaled Leicester Square…”.

Josh Barrie said: “Leicester Square’s new Greggs flagship is coming along. All for it.”

Another Twitter user said: “The North is officially taking over London – we truly love to see it.”

While on Instagram foodie blog Eating With Tod exclaimed: “Attention Londoners, it looks like [Greggs] have something tasty cookin’ at Leicester Square.”
