Philippe Conticini, which became a TikTok sensation for its giant croissants, has launched a new north London cafe with a bakery on site.

On Tuesday, the French brand opened its doors at 206 Upper Street, which was formerly home to Rudy's Vegan Diner, near Highbury Corner and Angel.

The venue in the upmarket Islington shopping street becomes the third outlet for Philippe Conticini, which has locations in South Kensington and Camden's Buck Street Market.

It has seating and a takeaway counter, as well as a licensed bar which will be serving cocktails. Cakes on sale include bûche de Noël - Yule log - and macaroons.

Fresh croissants and pain au chocolat are baked on site every day, including the famous giant pastries.

Operational director Ludovic Carassi told LondonWorld: "We do 50 a day within London. We bake them a bit in the evening and we finish them in the morning because they are so big. We have pre-order and we have some stock available in the shop. Now we have the bakery here we can be a bit more flexible. With the shops in South Ken and Camden it's a bit more difficult because [there is] no bakery."

The pain au chocolat XXL is priced at £28 and the croissant XXL is £25.

Ludovic joked: "I have two a day - so I make sure I stay healthy. 1.2kg of happiness (giant croissant) and 1.3kg of happiness (giant pain au chocolat)."

The Islington cafe is opposite the famous pub, music venue and theatre The Hope and Anchor and next to fish and chip shop The Trawlerman.

It joins several cafes already open along a stretch of Upper Street which already includes British Patagonia, Belle Epoque Patisserie, Euphorium and Workers Cafe.

Philippe Conticini is open seven days a week at 206 Upper Street. The nearest Tube station is Highbury & Islington.
