Known for its diverse food scene you can try almost any cuisine in London but over the years it has also become famous for a few of its own creations including a few that may surprise you.
While the Chelsea Bun kind of gives its capital link away with its name, you’d assume the scotch egg hails from the north of the UK but it is another food that was actually first created in London.
From sweet treats to savoury snacks, here are some of the foods that originate in the capital city:

1. Smoked salmon
Smoked Salmon is an east London delicacy alongside other classics including pie and mash and jellied eels. One of the capital’s oldest smokehouses H. Forman & Son has been producing the salmon offering since 1905. | ALF photo - stock.adobe.com Photo: Adobe Stock

2. Chelsea Bun
As the name suggests, the circular spirals of dough that are typically studded with currents were first created in the affluent area of the capital. Dating back to the 1700s the treat is believed to have caught on after receiving the royal seal of approval with both George II and George III said to have both enjoyed the bun during their reigns. | Adobe Stock Photo: Adobe Stock

3. Bourbon biscuits
The chocolate sandwich style biscuit with a dark cocoa butter cream filling is another sweet treat that originated in the capital. Bermondsey biscuit company Peek Freans first introduced the offering to London locals in 1910. | Adobe Stock Photo: Adobe Stock

4. Omelette Arnold Bennett
Named after the novelist and journalist Arnold Bennett, the indulgent edition of the classic omelette which features smoked haddock and cheese got its title as the rich recipe was created especially for the writer by a chef at the Savoy Hotel. | chandlervid85 - stock.adobe.com Photo: Adobe Stock
