Angel Islington: Huge new sports bar Northwood to show Premier League football and Rugby World Cup

A new sports bar with 12 UHD screens is set to open in north London next month.

Northwood will open in Angel Central, Islington in September after a 3,600 sq ft space was taken over by Maven Leisure.

The company has 13 bars, pubs and restaurants in London including rooftop bar Aviary in Shoreditch and The Botanist Sloane Square. It operates three sports bars: Greenwood (Victoria), Westwood (Shepherd’s Bush) and Redwood (London Bridge).

The new Northwood, in Liverpool Road, will be open in time for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, as well as showing sports including Champions League and Premier League football, Formula 1, cricket and darts.

The venue, which has a south-facing terrace, will serve a food menu including pizza, burgers, wings and small plates such as loaded chilli waffle fries and mozzarella dippers. Sharing platters will include The Wingback platter - with 1kg of crispy wings, as well as sides and dips - and The Quarterback platter of cheeseburgers, fries and hot sauces.

Ed Martin, CEO of ETM Group & Maven Leisure, London, said: “We can’t wait for Northwood to touch down on Angel this September as the neighbourhood’s first dedicated sports bar and kitchen. As soon as doors open we’ll be kicking off with the Rugby World Cup, giving locals and beyond the chance to come experience our premium dining and state of the art audio visual systems.”

The latest pub opening in Angel is The Junction, which has moved into the former JD Wetherspoon-run The Angel.

Northwood will open in September 2023 and the opening date will be announced later this month.
