It has its roots in Ireland 50 years ago but the clothes retailer is now a fixture of England’s high streets.
The budget clothing chain has 27 outlets in Greater London, having seen rapid expansion since buying out Littlewoods in 2005. It now has more than 150 outlets in the UK, as well as dozens in Spain and Germany and a presence in several US cities.
In February, Primark announced plans to extend its store at Westfield in Stratford. The expansion, due to be completed in early 2024, will see the current store almost double in size, moving from two floors to four, and expanding from 45,100 sq ft to 81,000 sq ft.
The company has committed to a £140 million investment in the UK, which it says will see it create at least 850 new jobs and increase its selling space by more than 160,000 sq ft over the next two years.
Over the years the company has come in for criticism for the treatment of workers involved in the supply chain. In 2006 Primark joined the Ethical Trading initiative and it has published a ‘supplier code of conduct” on its website.
