A scenic ramble, fresh air, and a meal in a traditional pub: nothing quite beats a walk in the English countryside.
From the Seven Sisters Cliffs to the rolling hills of the South Downs, there are plenty of open, green spaces and quaint villages within easy reach of London.
So lace up your walking boots, grab your bag, and leave the ‘Big Smoke’ behind: these are five of the most beautiful countryside walks within just a train journey away from London.
1. Epping Forest Oak Trail
The Epping Forest Oak Trail is a 6.6-mile loop beginning and ending in the village of Theydon Bois, taking you through some beautiful parts of northern Epping Forest and its surrounding Buffer Lands on its way. Length: 6.6 miles

2. Box Hill, Surrey
Box Hill is the summit of the North Downs. Trains to Box Hill & Westhumble or Dorking run very regularly from London Waterloo, and a plethora of cyclists and walkers mean that the area is very well signposted. Start out at Box Hill & Westhumble station and cross over the A25 (using the underpass) and then set off up the steep ascent of the hill (just behind the Mercure Hotel). Once at the top of the hill follow the red signposts for the Box Hill Hike which takes you on a 5km loop ending up at the viewing platform. Length: 6.8 miles

3. Thames Path
The Thames Path is a good challenge for any hiking enthusiasts. It follows the river for 184 miles from its source in the Cotswold hills to the sea at the Thames Barrier in Greenwich. On its way, the trail passes peaceful water meadows rich in wildlife, historic towns and cities and many lovely villages. 4. Seven Sisters
The Seven Sisters are a series of chalk cliffs stretching from Cuckmere Haven to Birling Gap in East Sussex, England. The 21.2 km (13.2 miles) Seven Sisters walk starts at Seaford beach and finishes in Eastbourne. Closest train station: Take the train from London Victoria or London Bridge to Seaford, changing at Brighton (2 hours). Return train Eastbourne to Clapham Junction or London Bridge. | Getty Images
