In the coming days, over 600,000 people will receive an invitation for them to have their spring booster jab as the NHSCOVID-19 Vaccination Programme spring booster campaign ramps up.

This comes amid worrying rises in the number of people testing positive for Covid-19 sparking fears that the virus could once again become more widespread.

The latest figures confirm that this is the third week in a row in which infections have increased.

Who is eligible for a fourth dose?

Spring boosters were rolled out last week, and according to NHS England, almost 500,000 people have come forward for their jab.

So far, it is estimated that since the first Covid-19 jab, administered in December 2020 more than 118 million vaccinations, including 32 million boosters, have been delivered.

Around 5.5 million immunosuppressed or people aged over 75 will be eligible for a spring booster over the next few weeks and months, with 620,000 people to be invited imminently.

The spring booster is a new campaign, with immunity from older vaccination not being as strong, as it is most likely that those eligible for this one likely had their most recent dose in September and October last year.

Why are cases rising?

In the last few months, we have slowly seen restrictions in the UK change and become less strict.

This includes the rule change of wearing masks in most areas being dropped, rule changes such as the mandatory rule to wear a mask in places such as supermarkets being dropped.

Another big change is the slow decrease of the amount of days you must self-isolate for when you test positive for Covid-19. At one point, the days needed was 14, but dropped to as low as five.

The steady relaxation of rules is thought to be a key reason for the sudden spike in cases and also a change in public attitude has also contributed.
