Omicron Covid variant: Six London boroughs in top 10 UK areas with fastest rising Covid rates

London boroughs make up six of the top 10 council areas with the highest rising Covid case rates in the UK, figures have revealed.

Data has shown six of the capital’s boroughs - Hackney and the City of London, Southwark, Islington, Barking and Dagenham, Lambeth and Lewisham - are among the top 10 local authorities with the biggest increasing rates of coronavirus.

It comes as the UK today hits its highest ever daily case number, as shocking Omicron numbers prompt a spike in infections.

Speaking at a No 10 press conference, prime minister Boris Johnson thanked NHS staff and volunteers and urged the public to come forward to take up their booster jabs.

While the director of NHS England Dr Nikki Kanani pleaded for volunteers to come forward and support health workers in delivering the vaccine, imploring: “We need your help.”

Chief medical officer Chris Whitty said Omicron was moving at a “phenomenal speed” and the UK would see “records be broken a lot in the next few weeks".

As of the week ending on December 9, Hackney and the City of London has the third highest rising case rate, with an increase of 61.45% from the previous week, just below Renfrewshire and the Shetland Islands, which both saw an increase of 64% or above.

Southwark and Islington were at fourth and fifth place respectively, with rises of 61.42% and 59.21%.

In seventh place was Barking and Dagenham, with a rise of 50.95%

While Lambeth and Lewisham took ninth and tenth place respectively, with rises of 46.04% and 45.70%.

In terms of a rise in numbers, Hackney and the City of London saw cases jump from 1,087 to 1,755 in just a week.

Cases in Southwark rose from 1,340 to 2,163, and from 917 to 1,460 in Islington.

The rise in Barking and Dagenham was from 791 to 1,194, while Lambeth and Lewisham saw rises from 1,503 to 1,383 to 2,195 and 2,015.

From today, every adult in the country can book their booster jab which is also being offered at walk-in clinics, including at Wembley Stadium, Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals and the Science Museum.
