William Hare celebrates the topping out of London’s largest commercial reused steel project

Global leader in engineered steel solutions, William Hare celebrates the topping out of GPE’s 30 Duke Street St James’s ahead of programme.

Collaborating with multiple delivery partners including Mace, William Hare Group played a pivotal role in the success of the scheme which will be the largest commercial reused steel project in London.

Hare installed 580 tonnes of structural steel, 439 tonnes of which were recovered and reused. With 78% of the steel frame made from reclaimed steel, primarily sourced from GPE’s former City Place House, the project’s reuse-first approach achieved a carbon saving of 744 tonnes, reducing emissions by 90% compared with the use of new steel.

This approach also sets a new benchmark for sustainable construction and reflects William Hare’s commitment to driving low-carbon innovation within the steel industry through embracing the circular economy and transitioning to greener steel solutions.

Simon Bourne Project Director at William Hare Group, said: “This project is a brilliant example of how innovation and collaboration can drive meaningful change in the built environment. We’re proud to have contributed to a scheme that not only redefines sustainable construction but also delivers tangible carbon savings through the reuse of structural steel and we hope to see many future projects follow this blueprint.”

The topping out ceremony was hosted by GPE and included representatives from William Hare, Mace, The Crown Estate, and the building’s future occupier, leading global investment firm, CD&R. The event featured speeches from the delivery teams’ senior leaders and welcomed over 80 guests from across the supply chain.

Designed by Elliot Wood in partnership with Make Architects, 30 Duke Street St James’s will be one of London’s most sustainable commercial developments, with CD&R set to move in next summer on a 15-year lease.
