Pub with oldest license in London, Williamson’s Tavern, following major refurbishment
Nicholson’s Pubs Collections is proud to announce the reopening of Williamson's Tavern, an iconic London Pub just a two-minute walk from Mansion House Underground Station, following an extensive refurbishment.
Tucked away in Groveland Court, Williamson’s Tavern holds the oldest license in the City of London and boasts a rich heritage dating back to the 1700s. Originally built as the residence for the Lord Mayors of London, this historic venue later became a favourite haunt of King William III and Queen Mary. The grand iron gates at the entrance—still standing today—were a gift from the royal couple to the Lord Mayor, adding a regal touch to its enduring legacy.
Beneath the tavern, you'll discover the Martha Bar, nestled in the atmospheric cellar. Named after Martha, the resident ghost said to roam the pub’s ancient halls, the bar offers a unique blend of character, history, and a touch of the supernatural.
Whether you're drawn by its royal connections, haunted lore, or traditional charm, Williamson’s Tavern is a true London treasure waiting to be explored.

Guests will be welcomed by a refreshed new look throughout the pub, featuring new furniture and a carefully updated interior. The iconic Martha’s Bar has been thoughtfully transformed from a dining space into a more traditional, characterful cellar bar. The outside space has also been upgraded to increase standing space, making it an ideal spot for socialising in the warmer months. In addition to the aesthetic upgrades, there are now more flexible bookable spaces available for private events—ranging from small gatherings in various cosy corners of the venue to exclusive hire of Martha’s Bar, or even full weekend hire of the entire pub, which is quickly becoming a favourite choice for weddings and special celebrations.
Inside the pub, guests can continue to enjoy everything you’d expect to find on a respectable British pub menu, including traditional fish and chips, the very popular steak and Nicholson's pale ale pie and a delicious spinach and falafel burger.
Along with the food menu, guests will also be greeted with an extensive drinks menu, boasting a wide selection of gin options and cask, craft beers and world lagers and during summer, there will also be a choice of mouth-watering spritzers.
Speaking about the refurbishment, Sabrina Sivell, general manager, said: “ Myself and the team are so excited about the remodel and can’t wait to welcome back our existing guests as well as meet new ones ”.
Following the extensive refurbishment and significant investment made at the pub, the team is so excited to pour pints and serve high-quality, delicious food to guests.
