Princess Opeyemi Bright becomes UK's Youngest Mayor at 29
On May 16, 2025, the momentous inauguration marked the beginning of a new era in Nigerian global leadership and British politics. Princess Bright was born in the UK to Nigerian parents, and her success is a testament to the expanding influence of Nigerians outside as well as a personal achievement.
During her inauguration, she declared, "This is nothing short of God's grace. As a proud Nigerian, I shall represent my background with excellence and humility, and I am honoured to serve my borough. May others be motivated to aspire, lead, and serve on this path."

Hide AdBright started his political career at a young age. At just 22 years old, she became a councillor and has spent the last seven years pushing for more economic opportunities, better social acceptance, and increased youth empowerment. She has dedicated herself to service because of the way she was raised. She is the daughter of Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, a senior preacher in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), and Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, who was Hackney's Civic Mayor from 2006 to 2007.

Her candidacy serves as a symbol of a broader pattern: Nigerians' expanding political influence abroad. Nigerians are making their views heard in global government, from US Representative Esther Agbaje in Minnesota to Conservative MP Kemi Badenoch, who is the UK's Secretary of State for Business and Trade, to Labour MP Chi Onwurah and Canadian Minister Uzoma Asagwara.
Kimaya Kapoor, an actor, model, and Taekwondo expert, stated, "As a woman, artist, and athlete, I am deeply inspired by Princess Opeyemi Bright's journey. Her achievement as the youngest mayor in the UK is not just a personal victory but a powerful reminder that age, background, and gender should never limit our aspirations. Her story inspires young people all over the world to act with purpose, integrity, and courage. It also values Nigerian culture and recognises the role of the international Nigerian community. I appreciate her reaching this important step and trust it encourages others to follow their dreams and become unafraid of the future."
Princess Bright being elected encourages females and immigrants to pursue political office and shows that young Americans care about politics. Besides, when the nation requires favourable narratives, it makes Nigeria's soft power stronger.

Hide AdHer tale serves as a source of inspiration and resilience for many people. It demonstrates that Nigerian kids can flourish and lead anywhere in the world, given the right conditions, ethics, and opportunities.

Her rise also serves as a wake-up call for Nigerian decision-makers. There is a strategic opportunity to engage the diaspora in national development, given its continued success on a global scale. Policies that support international collaborations, foster diaspora involvement, and engage in youth leadership may help the country realise its full potential.
