Students and staff at Harris Academy Bermondsey are celebrating after the school was judged outstanding in all areas following a visit from Ofsted in February.

The inspectors returned a glowing report which highlights the supportive and aspirational environment at the Academy, noting that “the values of ambition, compassion and respect are evident throughout the school’s work”. Furthermore, students are said to be “exceptionally well supported to succeed” through both the academic and pastoral provision offered.

The curriculum at the Academy is a focal point of the report with inspectors commenting it “demonstrates high ambition for all pupils” and “often exceeds the scope of what is expected nationally”. In response to this exciting curriculum, students across all year groups show “enthusiasm and excitement towards their learning”. Inspectors also praised the quality of teaching, observing the “excellent knowledge” of staff which allows students to “develop a rich body of knowledge and achieve very highly”.

From the “exceptional” enrichment offer to the “carefully planned pastoral curriculum”, the Academy is said to provide “numerous, varied opportunities to nurture, develop and stretch pupils’ talents and interests”.

Moreover, students in the Sixth Form are said to be “extremely well prepared for the next stage of their education”, with “a very high proportion” of students pursuing university degrees after leaving the Academy. Likewise, the inspectors praised the Academy’s “comprehensive careers programme” which offers insights and guidance on pursuing a range of career opportunities, including through themed events and visits from a variety of speakers.

Gizlé Landman, Principal at Harris Academy Bermondsey, said:

“I am delighted with this outcome, which is a testament to the continued hard work of our fantastic students and staff. It is particularly pleasing that the inspectors observed the enthusiasm which our students bring to every lesson and the respect and care which they show one another, always supporting each other to achieve their potential.

“Thank you to our entire Academy community whose ongoing support is vital to our students’ continued success.”
