A plot of land with potential at the heart of Whitechapel went under the auctioneer’s gavel this week.

The site at 97 Whitechapel High Street was among 173 lots in the latest auction held by one of the top five property auctioneers in the UK, Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers.

It was sold for £425,000 freehold after competitive bidding at the firm’s auction which ended on Friday 1 November.

Senior Auction Appraiser Russell Hawkes said: “The expected strong interest in this land – which is in an excellent location virtually on the edge of the City of London – certainly materialised.

“We had strong bidding for the site, extending to 0.005 hectares (0.01 acre) and just yards from Aldgate East railway station, which translated into an excellent result for both vendor and purchaser.

“Although we are not aware of the buyer’s intention for the site, there was a previous planning application approved for a development of a mixed commercial and residential scheme in 2019, which has since lapsed.

“We therefore considered the site may lend itself for a variety of different schemes with a new application submitted and any future planning will be subject to all necessary consents being obtainable.”

The previous planning permission granted by The London Borough of Tower Hamlets was for three one-bedroom duplex flats set over ground to six floors plus a commercial unit in the basement, subject to conditions.

The next auction, the final one of eight this year, goes live on Monday 9 December and ends on Wednesday 11 December. Closing date for entries is 18 November and the catalogue is available from 22 November.
