Numan aims to set the gold standard for safe, AI-driven consumer healthcare

The London headquartered pioneering health tech company has deepened its commitment to AI, designed to further support the success of its obesity management offering

  • Numan is rolling out an AI-powered Health Assistant built on a proprietary safety framework to ensure responsible, scalable AI in healthcare. It is the first of a suite of proprietary, AI-driven patient engagement and support tools that Numan aims to launch in 2025.
  • Key to this is their Aegis Monitoring System, a unique platform that’s been built from the ground-up and monitors, evaluates and safeguards every patient interaction, setting Numan apart from other, retrofitted AI solutions in consumer healthcare.
  • More than 3000 patients are using Numan’s AI-powered Health Assistant as the company continues to roll out in beta - a key milestone in Numan’s mission to bridge the gap between patient needs and scalable healthcare solutions.
  • The AI Assistant will initially support Numan’s obesity management services which helped patients achieve a total weight loss of over 200,000kg (the equivalent of 17 double decker buses).

Leading digital healthcare provider, Numan, is launching its new AI Health Assistant, designed to set the gold-standard for AI-assisted healthcare. Built on a proprietary quality and safety framework, the AI Assistant blends large language model (LLM) technology with expert-designed prompts, providing real-time, personalised health guidance under rigorous safety and regulatory standards. It is the first of a suite of proprietary, AI-driven patient engagement and support tools that Numan aims to launch in 2025.

Currently in beta, the AI Health Assistant has initially been rolled out to more than 3,000 patients. It offers immediate, tailored advice on topics ranging from healthy recipes to exercise insights, backed by Numan’s robust safety framework and continuous monitoring. This includes manual reviews by trained health coaches, ensuring any patient who needs further clinical support is quickly escalated to a clinician.

By tailoring AI-driven insights to patient needs and behaviours, Numan’s Health Assistant is helping patients overcome barriers to long-term success in managing obesity, ensuring they achieve sustainable health outcomes.

Sokratis Papafloratos, CEO and founder of Numan, commented: “The key to improving healthcare is creating continuous, personalised experiences that can scale to millions. That’s why we’re building our own in-house frameworks and technology that can fundamentally reshape how healthcare is delivered.

"In 2024, we saw incredible growth with our obesity management programme, and the next step is to make these services available to even more people. Our new AI-powered Health Assistant is central to that mission.

"The fact is healthcare faces a critical gap in delivering personalised, scalable solutions, particularly for stigmatised conditions like obesity. With our proprietary safety frameworks and patient-centred AI, Numan is bridging this gap. We’re one of the first companies to develop and deploy personalised, clinically sound AI solutions directly to obesity patients - and we’re committed to setting the gold standard as we do so.”

Central to Numan’s approach - and key to both the safety and scalability of the service - is a unique AI-driven evaluation tool built to help ensure patient safety, clinical accuracy, and swift human intervention when required, internally known as the Numan Aegis system.

Unlike retrofitted safety mechanisms, Aegis was also built from the ground up to integrate continuous monitoring and adaptive learning, ensuring the AI Assistant evolves to meet the highest standards of safety and relevance.

By analysing every interaction, Aegis ensures that patients receive timely, safe, and personalised information that stays within the appropriate scope for coaching and support. It does this through a robust testing framework, smart escalation system, and application of safety classifiers. As a result, the AI Assistant now delivers up to 99% clinically reviewed accuracy, with additional oversight from trained health coaches.

As debates about the ethics and safety of AI in healthcare grow, Numan is setting the benchmark for responsible innovation, embedding governance into every layer of its AI systems, including compliance with the ISO42001 standard. The ISO framework offers detailed guidance and a structured approach to managing AI-related risks, effectively balancing governance with innovation.

By proactively incorporating these best practices into the very design of their management system, Numan signals its commitment to responsible AI deployment and will continue to do so with the additional compliance with future AI and cybersecurity regulatory requirements that will enhance patient safety in the UK.

Overall, Aegis represents a cornerstone of Numan’s commitment to ethical AI, setting new benchmarks for safety, accuracy, and personalisation. By embedding these principles into every layer of our AI systems, Numan is paving the way for a healthcare future where patients can trust technology to deliver meaningful, high-quality care.

Dr Paul Sacher, Clinical Scientist at Numan and a global leader in AI and digital health, said: “Our focus is on advancing AI-driven healthcare that is both safe and highly personalised. From the very beginning, we recognised that scalability and safety must go hand in hand, which is why we built Aegis from the ground up.

"As an automated monitoring and evaluation system, Aegis addresses a key challenge in healthcare AI: ensuring rigorous oversight and clinical accuracy, even as systems scale to support thousands - or millions - of patients.

"We are equally committed to a patient-centred approach, integrating innovative features that adapt in real time to individual needs and behaviours. We’re developing dynamic, phenotype-based support that evolves in real time with each patient. This includes a scientifically validated cognitive behavioural evaluation tool - created by our team of psychologists, behavioural experts and data scientists - to help identify and address barriers to successful weight management. This will ensure that we provide a truly personalised and holistic healthcare journey for every patient.”

Dr Alexander Graham, Partner at The AbedGraham Group and expert in AI risk management for healthcare, shared: “It has been a pleasure to work with Numan on the development of their ISO42001 AI Management System (AIMS).

"As artificial intelligence use continues to grow in healthcare, providers of these systems must be aware of the risks they present to patients. By adopting the principles of ISO42001 throughout its product lifecycles, Numan has demonstrated industry leadership and a commitment to regulatory excellence. We look forward to supporting them in the coming months and years as their portfolio of AI capabilities grows further.”
