A major UK fashion brand has confirmed plans to shut 33 stores before the end of January 2026, putting dozens of town centres at risk of losing a familiar retail fixture.
High street firm River Island is pressing ahead with the closures as part of a wider restructuring plan designed to stabilise the business and avoid falling into administration.
While the move will see dozens of physical stores disappear, River Island says it is reshaping its estate to better reflect how customers now shop.
Alongside the closures, the retailer will also pay reduced rent on a further 71 stores. As part of the plan, landlords have been asked to accept rent cuts for the next three years, with some sites potentially seeing rent payments paused altogether.

The proposals were approved by a High Court judge in August. River Island has not yet commented directly on the individual store closures, but earlier this year chief executive Ben Lewis said the company had a “clear transformation strategy” focused on long-term survival.
He said recent improvements to its fashion ranges and in-store experience were already showing signs of progress, adding that the restructuring would allow the brand to “align our store estate to our customers’ needs”.
For shoppers, the closures may signal the final chance to visit local branches, with many expected to host clearance sales as stores prepare to shut their doors.
