A quick overnight getaway in the UK is becoming increasingly expensive, with the cost of just one day and night away now rivalling the price of a full weekend break in some destinations. Once food and drink, transport, accommodation, and paid attractions are factored in, even short trips can come with a surprisingly high price tag, particularly in cities with strong tourist demand or limited hotel availability.

To uncover where travellers pay the most for a one-night stay, the research team at Ireland Prestige Tours analysed the typical costs faced by a 24-hour visitor across UK cities. The study compared average restaurant meal prices, pint and coffee costs, local transport fares, standard taxi rates, one-night hotel prices for 5-6 June, and entry fees for each city’s main tourist attraction. These figures were combined to calculate a total estimated 24-hour visitor cost, ranking cities from most to least expensive for a short overnight break.

Westminster stands out as the UK’s third most expensive city for a 24-hour visit, with a total estimated cost of £253. Unlike cities like Aberdeen or Armagh, Westminster’s ranking is driven by consistently high everyday spending rather than a single standout expense. The average restaurant meal costs £80, the priciest pint in the top 10 at £6.50, and coffee averages nearly £4. While hotel costs are moderate at £126 per night, the combination of high food, drink, and attraction prices keeps Westminster near the top of the list.

The UK’s most expensive cities for a one-night break show some surprising results. Aberdeen tops the list at £323 for a 24-hour stay, thanks mainly to its pricey main attraction. Armagh comes in second at £271, with hotel costs pushing the total up even though its main site is free. Westminster is third at £253, standing out for high everyday spending on food and drinks, while Bath ranks fourth at £238, combining expensive restaurants with a costly attraction.

Rounding out the top ten, Newry is fifth (£236), Edinburgh sixth (£230), Cambridge seventh (£223), Lisburn eighth (£210), Doncaster ninth (£204), and Belfast tenth (£203). The list shows two trends: a single premium experience, like in Aberdeen, can skyrocket costs, while in smaller cities, like Armagh or Newry, high hotel prices make short stays surprisingly expensive. Bigger cities tend to have costs spread more evenly across food, accommodation, and attractions.
