Westminster pubs are surprisingly cheap places to watch football

For Brits, football is far more than a game. It is ritual, routine and release all rolled into 90 minutes. From midweek qualifiers to major international tournaments, millions head to their local rather than their living room, choosing the buzz of a packed pub over the quiet of the sofa. Big screens, shared groans at missed sitters and heated debates over refereeing decisions are part of the experience. But as the cost of living continues to bite, the price of that classic football night out can vary wildly depending on where you live.
To find out exactly where it is cheapest to watch football out in the UK, including pubs, food, beer and travel costs, Betmaster analysed 63 areas across the country. The research compared the number of pubs and bars showing football per 10,000 residents alongside the average cost of a meal, a pint and a taxi to the pub.
Westminster is unique in the top cities because it combines high pub density with relatively higher costs for food, drink, and travel. The city has 93.37 pubs and bars showing football per 10,000 residents, giving fans plenty of venues to choose from, but a night out is more expensive compared with cities like Salford or Wrexham. A typical night out in Westminster costs around £44.40 in total, with food averaging £17.10, a pint at £6.50, and travel to the pub about £20.76. The wide choice of venues ensures that fans can always find a lively pub, but higher costs mean the overall experience is less budget-friendly than some other top-ranked cities.
The city’s compact but busy layout makes getting to pubs easy, though travel costs are higher due to taxis or short cab rides in central London. Westminster’s strong football culture ensures that pubs stay vibrant, whether for midweek qualifiers or major tournaments, allowing fans to enjoy cheering, debating, and the shared excitement of watching the game.
Compared with other top cities, Westminster offers far more venue options than cities like Doncaster or Preston, but the higher prices for food, beer, and travel push the total night-out cost up. It shows that even in an area with excellent venue availability, affordability can be affected by higher living costs, and fans need to balance choice with price when planning a night out to watch football.
