The Met Police said it is continuing to analyse “various clips of footage” to establish what offences were committed and by whom.

A man has been interviewed under caution in connection with an incident at a Peckham shop which resulted in a large protest yesterday afternoon.

Several hundred people gathered outside Peckham Hair and Cosmetics London in Rye Lane after footage circulated online showing an altercation between a man and a woman in the store.

The 31-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assault on Monday, September 11, and was later bailed pending further enquiries.

Police said they attended the premises after being called at 1.16pm, to reports of the woman attempting to steal items and an employee preventing her from leaving.

A Met spokesperson has now said a 45-year-old man has been interviewed under caution earlier today, September 13.

“We continue to examine various clips of footage that depict small sections of the wider incident and are working to establish what offences were committed and by whom.

“My officers will be patrolling Rye Lane today to provide reassurance to the community – I know that this incident will cause concern and I urge anyone who is worried to speak with their local policing team or with officers on patrol.”

The protest was organised after a video circulating on social media appeared to show a man grab a woman by the neck after she had hit him over the head with a basket.

A LondonWorld reporter, who was at the protest, said there was a constant stream of people writing messages on the front of the shop, and that there were several hundred people in attendance.

A spokesperson for the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “The mayor is aware of the incident that took place in Peckham and the understandable concern it has raised in the local community.

“It is right that the full investigation will include reviewing the actions of everyone involved and the mayor remains in touch with Met leaders.”
