Legendary Britpop act Blur are set to play their first headline show in London since 2015, with the announcement the group are set to headline Wembley Stadium for their only UK show next year. The performance will take place on July 8, 2023 with support from hip-hop artist Slowthai, Sheffield Mercury Award nominee Self Esteem and London electronic duo Jockstrap.

The line up all gave their thoughts on the announcement through Live Nation, with lead singer Damon Albarn, fresh from his MTV EMA 2022 win with Gorillaz, stating “We really love playing these songs and thought it’s about time we did it again.” Guitarist Graham Coxon also commented, saying “I’m really looking forward to playing with my Blur brothers again and revisiting all those great songs.”

“Blur live shows are always amazing for me. A nice guitar and an amp turned right up and loads of smiling faces” he continued, as bassist and cheese maker Alex James echoed Coxon’s excitement, saying “There’s always something really special when the four of us get in a room. It’s nice to think that on 8th July  that room will be Wembley Stadium.”

One of the biggest British bands of the last three decades, Blur have released eight studio albums and collected ten NME Awards, six Q Awards, five BRIT Awards and an Ivor Novello Award, and played live to thousands of devoted fans across the globe.  The band’s most recent album, The Magic Whip topped the UK charts on its release in 2015; coincidentally, 2015 was the last time that the London lads performed in the capital.

Drummer Dave Rowntree summed up their 2023 London performance best in his statement about the show: “After the chaos of the last few years, it’s great to get back out to play some songs together on a summer’s day in London. Hope to see you there.”

Could Blur play Glastonbury 2023?

Blur are no strangers to Glastonbury, having performed on the Pyramid Stage and Main Stage in 2009 and 1998 respectively. The band first appeared at Glastonbury when they took to the NME Stage in 1992 and this followed up when they appeared on the same stage at the 1994 showpiece.
