The grid iron is rolled out in London as the Denver Broncos take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in the National Football League’s series of international games. The NFL decided to expand their regular season to 17 games in 2021 and that up to four of the teams from the conference whose teams were eligible for a ninth regular-season home game would instead be designated to play a neutral-site international game each year.

This year, games will be played in London (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Wembley Stadium), Mexico City, Mexico and Munich, Germany. This year’s teams that qualified for the international games in London are the Minnesota Vikings, the New Orleans Saints, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Denver Broncos, the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants.

The Denver Broncos and the Jacksonville Jaguars both play in the American Football Conference, with Denver representing AFC West and Jacksonville representing AFC South of the National Football League The splits between the AFC and National Football Conference (NFC) are due to both conferences at one stage being different American Football leagues, until their merger in 1970.

Three time Super Bowl winners, and boasting Pro Football Hall of Fame alumni include Terrell Davis and the legendary John Elway, the Denver Broncos have become one of the NFL’s most successful teams, having suffered only eleven losing seasons. Surprisingly, Denver was barely competitive during early years in the American Football League and National Football League.

They did not have a winning season until 1973 and qualified for their first playoffs in 1977, eventually advancing to Super Bowl XII that season. The Denver Broncos also jointly hold the dubious distinction of the most losses in a Super Bowl, tied with the New England Patriots at five each.

Owned by Shahid Khan, who also owns Premier League side Fulham, the Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the more recent franchises to join the NFL, becoming an expansion team alongside the Carolina Panthers in 1995. Despite their infancy, Jacksonville started their life in the National Football League strong by qualifying for the playoffs during four of their first five seasons.

Between their second and fifth seasons, they made four consecutive playoff runs, two division titles, and two AFC Championship Game appearances. Despite these early successes, the team has failed to make a playoff appearance since 2017 and are one of only four NFL teams to have never played the Super Bowl.
