West Ham United’s deadline day was busier than most of their Premier League rivals as they headed to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as the clock ticked towards the end of the window.

The Hammers lost 2-1 to the Blues after taking a first-half lead through the returning Jarrod Bowen. A move for Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson was confirmed early on Monday, with the 20-year-old Republic of Ireland international joining on loan for the remainder of the season.

The transfer deadline for Premier League clubs was 11pm on Monday, which is in line with a number of major European leagues. However, some transfer windows do not close until 11.59pm on Tuesday night. That is the case with the Eredivisie in the Netherlands, and it is reported in the country that Feyenoord are hoping to sign West Ham’s Luis Guilherme before their transfer deadline.

Feyenoord interest in Guilherme

West Ham agreed a £25m deal to sign the winger from Palmeiras in June, as the Brazilian penned a five-year contract at the London Stadium. However, he has featured infrequently since his move. He was introduced as a late substitute against Chelsea on Monday as Graham Potter looked for an equaliser.

Earlier in the window, an offer worth up to £12.5m was made by Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk. That figure is just half of what West Ham paid to sign Guilherme six months previous. Now Voetbal International in the Netherlands are reporting that Feyenoord are eyeing a permanent move for Guilherme as they ‘hope to buy’ the player but are also open to a loan move with an option to buy. FC Porto have also been credited with an interest but their transfer window is now closed.

Feyenoord’s reported interest comes after Santiago Gimenez left the Dutch club to join AC Milan for a club-record deal. The Mexican has moved to the San Siro in a deal worth 35 million euros, according to Voetbal International.

What next for West Ham?

The Hammers now have an extended break from action as the FA Cup takes centre stage this weekend. Potter’s side were knocked out of the competition by Aston Villa in the third round last month. Their next game is a home clash with London rivals Brentford on February 15.

After the defeat to Chelsea, Potter reflected: “I think we can be proud of our performance. I think you can see from the reaction of the supporters, they know their football, and I think the way they responded at the end of the game probably shows the effort the players put in. The way they played, the performance level, I think was good. We feel a little bit unlucky with the first goal and I think that was a key moment of the game.

“If we'd have hung on [to our lead] a little bit more, I think the [home] crowd was getting a little bit frustrated, but it wasn't meant to be. But again, the performance of the players, there were lots of positives there. Sometimes [decisions and events go against you and] that’s life. We have to deal with it and focus on the overall performance of the team and the effort of the players and the spirit of the players and the spirit of the team, like I said.

“Understanding that it's very difficult to press high here with the quality they have and the space they have, I thought we understood that well, limited them to not too much, and they had to make a lot of substitutions to get themselves into the game, which probably tells you about how good our shape was and how the application of the team was.”
