Rio Ferdinand has slammed calls for Song Heung-min to be dropped following Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League defeat to Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.

After an exceptional campaign last time out, the South Korean is yet to score a goal this season and was once again below par in Portugal.

Son’s performances have received plenty of criticism this season, however Ferdinand has called it ‘blasphemy’ and has defended the forward.

When asked on BT Sport if Harry Kane would face the same questions if he was in poor form, Ferdinand said: “No chance, blasphemy.

“Golden Boot winner last season, joint top goalscorer with Mo Salah. We’re six Premier League games in, a couple of Champions League games... and they’re asking for him to be dropped?

“Were they asking for Harry Kane to be dropped when he didn’t score in August all those times?

“For me, if I’m taking a player out of the Spurs team, [deciding between] him or Harry Kane would be the flip of a coin. He’s a top, top player.”

Son ended last season with 23 goals in the Premier League and was one of their key players under Antonio Conte as they achieved a top four finish.

Spurs have start this season strongly and are yet to be beaten in the Premier League as they sit third in the table, however Son continues to come under increasing pressure to lose his place in the starting line-up.

Richarlison has impressed since arriving in North London this summer, while Dejan Kulusevski also provides Conte with options up top.

Next up for Tottenham is a home clash with Leicester City and Son will be desperate to find his shooting boots ahead of the international break.
