Former Newcastle United and England captain Alan Shearer has congratulated Harry Kane after he became Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time record goalscorer and netted his 200th Premier League goal at the weekend.

The current England skipper surpassed the club record set by Jimmy Greaves when he scored his 267th goal for the club in Sunday’s narrow win over reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City. Kane struck the only goal of the game with quarter of an hour on the clock as he made the most of some determined play from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before firing past Ederson to seal his place in Spurs record books.

The timing of Kane’s landmark strike will not be lost on Shearer as it happened on the same weekend he celebrated the 17th anniversary of the day he became Newcastle’s all-time record goalscorer with a goal in a 2-0 home win against Portsmouth, surpassing a record set by Magpies legend Jackie Milburn.

Kane’s goal also saw him secure his place in an exclusive club of just three players to reach the 200-goal mark in Premier League history as he followed in the footsteps of former England captains Shearer and Wayne Rooney. Geordie icon Shearer took the social media to congratulate the Spurs striker on his achievement and joked both he and Rooney had been waiting for him to join them in the 200 club.

He tweeted: “Congratulations @HKane passing the great Jimmy Greaves record at @SpursOfficial. Also @WayneRooney and I were wondering where you’ve been! Well done on joining the 200 @premierleague club.”

Kane will now set his sights of surpassing the Premier League record of 260 goals scored by Shearer during his career with Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle. Speaking after reaching his latest landmark for Spurs, the striker said: “It’s a great feeling. When I started playing regularly eight or nine years ago now, it was never in my imagination to scored 200 Premier League goals. To be there now is exciting and I’ve got a few years left so hopefully there’s more to come.”
