Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher believes Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte ‘wants to be sacked’ after shocking the Premier League with his post-match rant following Saturday’s draw at Southampton.

The Italian was left visibly frustrated and annoyed after watching his top-four chasing side throw away a two-goal lead at St Mary’s and described his players as ‘selfish’ and seemed to question Spurs’ record under Daniel Levy.

He said: “I think it’s better to go into the problem, we are not a team. We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart.

“They’re used to it here. They don’t play for something important. They don’t want to play under pressure. They don’t want to play under stress. Tottenham’s story is this. 20 years there is the owner and they never won something. Why?”

Conte’s current contract comes to an end this summer and it seems unlikely he will be handed a new deal with negotiations showing no signs of reaching a successful conclusion. Monday morning brought reports from Sky Sports suggesting the former Internazionale manager had clarified his comments with the Spurs board and confirmed they were not intended to be a criticism of their running of the club.

Sky Sports pundit Carragher remains unconvinced and believes Conte is looking for a route out of the club in the near-future. He tweeted: “Conte wants to be sacked in this international break. Spurs should just put him out of his misery and do it tonight.”

The former England defender received a reply from Birmingham City striker Troy Deeney as he questioned whether he agreed with the Spurs boss.

Carragher answered: “His point about Spurs not winning for a long time is right, but you don’t speak about your own club like that. Especially when you’re getting paid fortunes by them! The improvement in Arsenal this season after finishing above them last season kills a lot of his arguments.”
