QPR inflicted a 2-1 defeat to Luton Town under the lights at Loftus Road in Championship action on Monday night.

QPR, Leeds United and Sheffield United rivals Luton Town have reached an agreement for Rob Edwards to leave his position after a difficult run of form for the side.

The Hatters sit 20th in the Championship after a fourth straight second tier defeat in the match against the R's at Loftus Road on Monday night. The club risks back-to-back relegations having been demoted from the Premier League last season.

Michael Frey and Morgan Fox were on the scoresheet as QPR won 2-1 this week. Marti Cifuentes' side were good money for the victory but it did come amid controversy with Frey seeming to handle the ball before his goal before an ambitious Ilias Chair shot took a big deflection of Fox in the second half.

Rob Edwards set to leave Luton Town

Taking to social media platform X, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook broke the news of an imminent contract termination on Wednesday. He wrote: "Understand Rob Edwards is leaving #LTFC. Mutual decision after a difficult first half of the season following relegation from the Premier League."

Defeat at Loftus Road was the 10th straight away game loss for Luton Town under Edwards this season and the manager was asked how he felt about his position at full-time. He said: "The results aren't good enough. You can see that the players are giving everything but results aren't good enough and we are in a results business.

"I've got a good relationship with Gary and the board. We continue to work really, really hard, the players, the staff, everybody. We're in a results business and that's it. The results aren't good enough."

Luton Town are in FA Cup action this weekend against high-flying Premier League opposition Nottingham Forest at The City Ground. Championship fixtures against Preston North End and Oxford United then follow as the side looks to avoid a relegation dogfight.

Luton Town last won a match on December 20, a 2-1 victory over Derby County at Kenilworth Road. Edwards maintained that his team has been playing better than the results suggest after losing to QPR.

Luton Town ‘against the ropes’ in recent weeks

He said: "We've had some big chances ourselves and it's another game where I'm sitting here saying the same things. In a really finely balanced match, we've come on the wrong end again.

"They're showing me downstairs, it's probably handball the first goal but we're not in the Premier League so that doesn't get given. Fair enough. It's 1-1 at half time, second half we were excellent and had to find a way to score in that first 15 minutes we were on top. We deserved to, then we didn't deserve to because we didn't put it in the back of the net.

"[When the deflected goal goes in] You're looking up to the heavens at that point and thinking, we're on the ropes and just continue to get hit week after week at the moment and that's tough."

Edwards has been in charge at Luton Town since 2022, having previously had stints at Watford and Forest Green Rovers. He achieved promotion to the Premier League with the Hatters in 2023 via the Championship play-offs.
