QPR’s first Championship rivals are in a spot of bother with the EFL, something that could significantly impact their transfer business.

QPR’s first rivals of the Championship season have caught the attention of the EFL, who have stepped in to help guide the club’s transfer business. In a strange situation, the Baggies will be monitored by league authorities due to concerns over their finances.

West Brom secured a playoff spot last season, losing in the semi-finals, and their bid to improve their squad has taken a blow despite them making just one paid-for signing this summer. Torbjørn Heggem cost the Baggies £500,000, but their other three signings were all free transfers.

Despite that, financial issues relating to their previous owners have seen the EFL step in to monitor the Midlands club’s transfers for the remainder of the summer window. Sky Sports News report that there are no concerns over the financial health of the club, but the EFL are concerned about the Baggies’ ability to remain within EFL Profit and Sustainability rules.

Rather than allow West Brom to breach the limit and suffer subsequent punishment, the EFL will monitor their spending to ensure there is no breach. It’s said that the issues have been caused by the club’s previous owners. West Brom are still said to be determined to strengthen, although they know further exits may be required after the departures of Okay Yokuşlu, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Conor Townsend.

West Brom’s new owners as of February, Bilkul Football WBA, are reportedly working directly with the EFL in a bid to work through the issues. In fact, Sky Sports say the Baggies have been working with the EFL to stay within the rules for the last 18 months. League rules suggest that “any club which is at risk of breaching PSR limits is given strict new guidelines to work within”.

QPR face West Brom at Loftus Road next Saturday in their Championship season-opener.
