Jorginho gave Mikel Arteta's side the lead in stoppage time thanks to a deflection off former goalkeeper Emi Martinez, and minutes later Gabriel Martinelli made sure of the win finishing off an open goal.

Here’s how we rated the Arsenal players:

Aaron Ramsdale - Made two saves, one of which was a vital stop towards the end of the game to tip Leon Bailey’s effort onto the crossbar. 7.

Ben White - Produced the cross for Saka’s opening goal and looked refreshed after being dropped for the Manchester City game. 6.

Gabriel - Won two out of his three ground duels with a 94 per cent pass accurate. Solid performance. 6.

William Saliba - Played Ollie Watkins onside for the opener although he was let down by Zinchenko’s error. Improved in the second half. 6.

Oleksandr Zinchenko - Gave the ball away for Villa’s first goal, but what a comeback. Superb strike and showed the required mental strength to guide Arsenal through the game. 7.

Granit Xhaka - Wasn’t his best game and was brought off in the second half. 5.

Jorginho - What an important goal that could be come May. He’s only been at the club for less than a month but would have repaid his transfer fee with that crucial strike. 8.
