A Chelsea favourite has resumed his managerial career in the Championship.

Coventry City have confirmed the appointment of Chelsea legend and former West Ham star Frank Lampard. Lampard has not held a permanent post since 2023 when he departed Everton, though he did briefly take interim charge of Chelsea after that.

The 46-year-old has previous Championship experience with Derby County having started his managerial career with the Rams. He now takes over at Coventry, who are in 17th place. The Sky Blues surprisingly sacked fan favourite boss Mark Robins after more than seven years in charge, with Robins having led them to promotion from League One and to a Championship playoff final.

Confirming the arrival of Lampard, a Coventry statement read; “Coventry City are delighted to announce the appointment of Frank Lampard as the Club’s new Head Coach. The 46-year-old has signed a two and a half year contract with the Sky Blues and will take charge of City for the first time this Saturday against Cardiff City at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Frank will be supported by two new coaches, Joe Edwards and Chris Jones, who he has worked with extensively previously.”

Coventry City owner and executive chairman Doug King said: “I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as Head Coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful.

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a Club are striving to reach.”

Lampard will be hoping to revive his managerial career having struggled to achieve longevity wherever he has been so far. Coventry will be hoping to get back towards mid-table this season, while they may well be eyeing a promotion charge in the coming years.
