Two heavyweights will collide at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea head to Manchester City in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening. It will be the first meeting between the two sides, who are set to face off for the first time this season in January.

Manchester City have performed well  in the past in this tournament, and won it six times between 2014 and 2021. Their last win in the competition came back in 2021, when they beat Tottenham Hotspurs 1-0.

Chelsea won the cup competition three times this century in 2005, 2007 and 2015. They also came runners up in the Carabao Cup in 2022, losing out to Liverpool on penalties after a goalless draw.

At the time, the Blues were managed by Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel was sacked in September, and was replaced by former Brighton and Swansea manager Graham Potter, who has enjoyed a good start to life at Chelsea.

The 2021 Champions League winners were actually leapfrogged by Potter’s former team. They suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal, who became the first ever club to win three times in a row at Stamford Bridge.
