Chelsea are closing on their return to Premier League action after more than a month on the sidelines.

The Blues endured a rocky start to the season, heading into the World Cup break eight points off the top four, though they do still possess a game in hand. Graham Potter’s men need to hit the ground running after the break if they want to make a serious run at qualifying for the Champions League this season, and they return with a clash with AFC Bournemouth.

He said: “This week we can have a few more players back in full training with us. Reece (James) has moved forward, Wesley (Fofana) and Carney (Chukwuemeka) are moving forward, so that’s positive. Then hopefully Ruben (Loftus-Cheek), Ben Chilwell can take a step forward in their rehab next week. We’re optimistic about that.

“Kepa (Arrizabalaga)is not quite with the team yet but has stepped up his rehab. Ruben is doing some work in the gym so we’re hopeful that he can be involved next week but we’ll see how he goes. There are lots of players at different levels and that’s the challenge but we’re making progress so that’s the positive”

O’Neill’s latest comments

Bournemouth have been in Carabao Cup action during the week, but before that game, he was asked about his squad and where he needs to strengthen after agreeing to take over full-time at the Vitality Stadium.

“I think we have a fantastic recruitment team, we will have plans in place to make sure that we strengthen in the right areas,” he said. “I think it’s really important to note that the group we’ve already got have been excellent, really, really good. 16 points on the board, been really competitive. But yeah, to give them some help, some depth, would benefit everybody, I’m sure.

“We’ll see what happens in January. As you know, January can be tricky.”
